About - Mee's Wood Poultry
The purchase of the land off Gospel Oak Lane outside Snitterfield in June 2013 turned our long-time back garden poultry hobby into a more substantial project. The motley mixed crew of hens and cockerels have remained, including a stubborn survivor out of half a dozen rescue hens who arrived six years ago with all manner of problems, but now the flock is taking a new shape and order. We have Barnevelders from the Netherlands, the striking brown-and-black Vorwerks from Germany, the blue-egg-laying Cream Legbars, three Indian Runner Ducks, attractve and extremely rare Zingem fowl from Belgium as well as newcomers this summer, again extremely rare in the UK, Hergnies from France and Ardenner large fowl from Belgium. We also have Ardenner bantams, but all of these are being developed for 2016. We are also planning to take in more rescue hens in a separate, quarantine-type area until they are known to be free of ailments, when they can be moved closer to the rest of the flock.
We plan to develop and expand as time and cost allows. We use British made coops from Steve Fisher Woodworking in Yorkshire and the pens, runs and fences are built on site by Jack Mee. We worm all hens with Flubenvet and use Verm-X, cod-liver oil and cider apple vinegar occasionally but do not vaccinate.
We do not sell birds before they are off heat at 6-8 weeks but do sell hatching eggs. Our birds are fed the Smallholder Range Natural Free Range chick crumbs, growers or layers pellets as appropriate. This feed is drug and hexane free, boosted with Omega 3 oils, linseed, is free from artificial colour-additives and contains no GM ingredients. On the rare occasion Smallholder Range has not been available for chick crumbs, we have used The Organic Feed Company.
We do not show our birds or take them off-site unless they are sold.
All photographs on our site are taken by Lydia Mee, or by Janet Mee, and are of our own birds.
We do not sell eggs in the marketplace but if you would like to collect some, from half a dozen up to a tray of thirty, a donation is welcome.
Visitors are welcome to Mee’s Wood but please call in advance as we aren’t easy to find and we come and go from the site during the day and evening.
We love what we do!
