A NEW YEAR, JANUARY 1st 2015
May 1, 2013
A new year and hopefully more progress and adventures with the woods and hens as well as further developing the Green Oval tree business... a 5-mile walk for Janet and I to celebrate being here at the start of another year. Murky skies but warm after the frosty end to 2014. The bird tally at the start of 2015 is 75 hens/cockerels/ducks. We have Barnevelders for sale (a dozen hens - and a couple of cockerels if anyone needs one) and Cream Legbars (3 or 4) a Light Sussex and a Welsummer plus some interesting crosses including a lovely big cream-legbar/bluebelle cockerel who is really striking. Hopefully we'll breed more Barnevelders and Cream Legbars this year as well as developing our very rare Zingem laying fowl from Belgium, our Ardenner bantams and Vorwerks. It will be really exciting to see how things turn out. I'd quite like some Bresse hens to go with the one cockerel who came from an experimental attempt with hatching eggs last year. He's a big lump. Love working with our poultry so much. A job for next week is painting the huts with the winter dose of wood preservative. We also clean out huts on a rotation basis - it's the legbars' turn next. The days are lengthening so we'll get some of their blue eggs soon.
The gliders whose field borders ours have applied for planning permission to fly motorised gliders which might be a pain. They've been turned down before but keep banging on the door. Could do without the noise, frankly. I also had to tell a pheasant shoot to get out of our woodland in December. Hopefully they will respect the boundaries in future - very empowering to yell 'Get off my land!' and I felt like the grumpy old men of my youth: "Can we have our pheasant back, mister?" - "No, you can't. Now go away..."
And my beloved birthright, Leicester City, came back to draw 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon. Great result after 2 awful decisions gave them 2 1st half penalties.
